If you've been waking up at 3 a.m. with the sheets stuck to you, or dragging through the afternoon even after a full night in bed, you're not imagining it. El Segundo doesn't usually get hot the way inland cities do, so when a heat wave pushes past the marine layer and the temperature holds in the 90s into the evening, houses here aren't built to shed that heat. The result shows up first in sleep, then in energy, then in how you feel by day three or four of it.
This part of the South Bay is used to the ocean doing the cooling work for it. When that stops happening overnight, a lot of people notice the change in their body before they notice it on a thermometer.
Why the housing stock here makes it worse
A large share of El Segundo's homes were built between the 1920s and the 1960s, back when nobody designed for sustained heat because nobody expected it. Single-pane windows, minimal attic insulation, and stucco walls that were meant to stay cool with an afternoon breeze instead trap heat once the air stops moving. Central air conditioning is still not universal in the older tracts near Main Street and the grid east of Sepulveda. Plenty of houses rely on a window unit in one room, a box fan, or nothing at all.
That matters at night specifically. A house that soaks up heat all day and has no real way to release it after sunset stays warm well past midnight. Bedrooms upstairs or on the west side of the house, the ones that catch the afternoon sun, often don't drop below the mid-70s even when the outside air has cooled.

What heat does to sleep and hydration together
Sleep quality drops fast once a bedroom sits above about 75 degrees, and it keeps dropping the longer that lasts. You lose deep sleep first, which is the stage that actually restores you, so you can spend eight hours in bed and still wake up tired. At the same time, a hot bedroom means more sweating overnight, and most people don't replace that fluid because they're asleep and not thinking about it.

What you can check and fix yourself
Start with the house, not the body. Close blinds and curtains on south and west facing windows before 10 a.m. so the sun never gets a chance to heat the room. A cheap indoor thermometer in the bedroom tells you more than guessing. If it's holding above 78 degrees at 9 p.m., that's the room to focus on.
Cross ventilation works better here than most places because the coastal air is usually cool once the sun is down, even during a heat wave. Open windows on opposite sides of the house in the evening and let the temperature difference pull air through. A fan in the window facing away from the ocean, pulling air out, does more good than a fan just stirring air in the middle of the room.
On hydration, plain water through the day matters more than trying to catch up in the evening. If you wake up with a headache, a dry mouth, or you feel unusually sluggish for more than a day or two into a heat wave, that's your body telling you the fluid balance is off, not just the sleep.
When it stops being a house problem
Fans and ventilation solve the environment. They don't solve a body that's already run a fluid deficit for several days. If you've been sweating heavily overnight, drinking less than usual because you're not hungry or thirsty in the heat, and you notice dizziness, a fast heartbeat at rest, or confusion in yourself or someone in the house, that's beyond what closing curtains and drinking a glass of water will fix. Older adults and anyone on blood pressure medication are especially prone to this during a stretch of hot nights, because their thirst signal is less reliable to begin with.
At that point the useful move is medical rehydration rather than home remedies, whether that's an urgent care visit or an IV hydration service that can restore fluids and electrolytes faster than drinking alone. It's a narrow line, but it's a real one: if better sleep and more water haven't turned things around after a couple of days, the problem has moved past what the house is doing and into what the body needs directly.
